This schoolbook from 1871 may be depicting scenes that we realistic for the period but the captions under each reveal a labeling system at the time that treats the residents of many parts of the world as less than equal - way less. They read clockwise: 1) Enlightened 2) Half-civilized 3) Savages 4) Barbarous.
